AMERICAN LITERATURE

The Instructor will be using the Gold Book as a frame for this course, but students do not need a copy.

The Short Story Unit delves into the works of Henry James, Nathaniel Hawthorne, James Thurber, Mark Twain, and others. Students learn about the elements of a short story, evaluating plots, interpreting literature, and much more.

Novel Units take an in-depth look at famous American novels. Students are challenged with thought-provoking questions, learn to interpret literature, analyze characters, and more.

The Essay Unit includes the process and uses for expository, descriptive, and narrative essays.

The Poetry Unit includes the poetry of notable American poets such as Emerson, Longfellow, Dickinson, Frost, Cummings, Auden, and more. Your student will analyze poetry, interpret poetry, and learn various poetic styles.

Reading and writing speeds vary, but students can expect roughly 3½-4½ hours of homework each week.

This class is for any student, grades 9-12, as well as advanced 8th grade students.

This full year course is worth 1 credit of high school English. Parents are responsible for managing the transcript for their student. The teacher will communicate the end-of-course grade within 2 weeks of the final class date.
