BRITISH LITERATURE
DURING THE ROMANTIC AND VICTORIAN ERAS

  • in this class, we will do a bit of time travel as we explore the works of:

    • Jane Austin

    • Charlotte Bronte

    • GK Chesterton

    • Charles Dickens

    • Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

    • George Bernard Shaw

    • Robert Louis Stevenson,

    • and various poets of the era.

  • We will discuss questions prompted by these works of literature, such as:

    • How has the role of women changed since the 1800's, and has it changed for the better?

    • What were the main struggles of the characters in these works, and how do those compare to our struggles today?

    • What do these authors have to say about timeless questions,such as "Does love conquer all?"

  • Students will be evaluated through essays, quizzes, reading assignments, class participation, and a final exam / project.

  • Class time will be devoted to vocabulary development, writing exercises, and class discussion.

  • Students will keep a reader’s journal, write several papers, complete weekly homework assignments, and take a final exam.

  • This class is for any students, grades 9-12, as well as advanced 8th grade students.

 

  • This one-semester course is worth 1/2 credit of high school English. Parents are responsible for managing the transcript for their student.  The teacher will communicate the end-of-course grade within 2 weeks of the final class date.

  • The class will meet on Thursdays from 10:00 AM until 11:30 AM. Cost is $150. A sibling discount, 10% of total, is offered.

Texts will be provided by Bristol Academy.   Students do not need to purchase books.

 

Students are expected to treat with care the Bristol Academy books on loan to them.
