BRITISH LITERATURE
DURING THE EARLY TO MID-20TH CENTURY

in this class, we will do a bit of time travel as we explore the works of:

C.S. Lewis
-
J.R.R. Tolkien
-
Agatha Christe
-
T.S. Elliot
-
Virginia Woolf
-
George Orwell
-
and other influential authors
-
-
We will discuss the historical and cultural context of these writers. (Particularly the influence of the First and Second World Wars).
- We will explore questions such as:
-
What universal truths do their works reveal?
-
What are the writers' world views and how they compare with our own?
-
What insights do these works give us into that time period?
-
How do these works still impact us today?
-

Students will be evaluated through vocabulary work, short essays, a few pop quizzes and one final presentation.

Students will be expected to read the assigned material, keep a journal and take part in class discussions.

This class is for any students, grades 9-12, as well as advanced 8th grade students.

This one-semester course is worth 1/2 credit of high school English. Parents are responsible for managing the transcript for their student. The teacher will communicate the end-of-course grade within 2 weeks of the final class date.

The class will meet on Thursdays from 10:00 AM until 11:30 AM. Cost is $135.
