Bristol Academy is in search of

a new partnership with an English teacher for Spring 2022.

Bristol Academy is looking for someone to join our teaching team to provide a course in English for the spring term of 2022 and possibly longer.

More information:

  • The location of classes is at First Christian Church, 311 Spencer St., Bristol, VA.

  • Classes meet for one session per week, 90 minutes.

  • 10:00--11:30 Thursdays is the preferred time.   We will consider other times but strongly prefer this time.

  • The teacher can set the curriculum.  We want our teenagers to improve their skills in writing, literature interpretation, and grammar.  We focus on recruiting highly qualified teachers and then defer to the teacher to set the curriculum.    Sample syllabi from previous teachers is available; ask Alison (see below) if you would like to see such samples.

  • Lots of homework is expected.  Many teachers use an online platform such as schoology to track and grade assignments.  Such platforms can also be used to encourage interaction among students.  Other teachers collect handwritten assignments, grade them by hand, and return them.  Some teachers do a combination of both.

  • Students are hard-working and engaged. We are a group of home-educating families who value academic rigor. These are not "typical teenagers." You will enjoy working with them!  We can connect you with current teachers to verify this.

  • We can afford to buy a class set of books from a place like thriftbooks.com.  We can work with the new teacher to find a suitable books and purchase a class set.  We have a class set of textbooks on

  • Alternatively, we can require students to buy their own books.

  • Class sizes vary. 5-15 students is the range. Each teacher can set a minimum number of students who must register in order to have his class be viable.  Currently, our fall class has 7 students.  We expect at least this many in the spring.

  • Teachers are paid directly by the parents and are paid per student.  So, of course, the teacher’s income is significantly affected by how many students register.

  • Teachers charge $125--$175 per student per semester; each teacher sets his own rate. See teacher pages for examples.

  • We are not hiring a teacher, because we are not even a legal entity. We are a loosely organized group of families, and we seek to connect a new teacher to our students. Each teacher is paid directly by parents.

  • All teachers must be committed Christians who are actively involved in a local church.  We do not require teachers to sign a specific statement of faith.  However, we do list the church membership of each teacher on his bio page, and parents can contact teachers if they have particular questions.

  • Most of our participating students are Christians; however, enrollment is open to students of any faith.

If you are interested in learning more, please email alison@holstonit.com.

To apply, send to alison@holstonit.com:

  • your resume

  • confirmation that you could teach Thursdays 10-11:30, or, a list of other times you could teach that are not in conflict with the other classes listed on our site.

  • the name of the church where you are a member

  • a brief comment about your active participation in that church family

  • any comments about the books you would prefer or the course description you would prefer.

  • any other general comments about why you would be a good fit for our group.

We will probably accept applications via email through October 31, 2021, but will decide sooner if we meet a great teacher before that time.  We will change/take down this page as soon as we have found someone.  So, if you are reading this then you can assume we haven't found anyone yet!

Thanks!
