ADVANCED
MUSICAL THEATRE

  • Advanced Musical Theatre class will focus on diving deeper in developing skills in singing, acting, and dancing. This will be a fast paced course meant for dedicated students. The goal will be to move past the logistics of putting together a show quickly so that we have more time to focus on the motivations and character development that are needed for more experienced performers. I will be requiring the students to do more work outside of class hours, so that when we gather together we can focus on more than just blocking. As an example of the fast pace of this course, I will expect students to be off book by the third week of class.

  • Through the course of this class we will be putting together a demonstration of The Sound of Music Youth Edition. The performance dates will be announced as soon as possible. We are currently looking at May 6th or May 13th.

Audition Information

  • For the first time this will be an audition based course. Meaning that students will audition for the show and if selected they will be enrolled in the course.

  • The auditions will be held on Thursday, January 2, 2025, from 1:30-4 PM in Bethany Hall at First Christian Church, 311 Spencer St., Bristol, VA (our former main classroom).

  • Use this link to sign up for auditions:  https://forms.gle/PQCwAuAgLwrVABNq8

  • For the auditions students will be expected to prepare a one minute monologue and a 60-90 second song of their choice. These should NOT be songs or monologues from the Sound of Music.  All students are required to sing for the auditions.

  • In addition to the students preparing songs and monologues, we will also be doing a few warm up games and cold reads.

  • Both the song and monologue must be memorized. Students are expected to bring their own backtracking to sing with, they are welcome to send the backtracking ahead of time or bring their own device to play their music.

  • If you have questions regarding the auditions or what songs/monologues to select please contact the director at hannah.k.stam@gmail.com

Acting Workshop

  • For the students accepted into the advanced Musical Theatre class there will be an Acting Workshop on January 14, 2025, from 5-6:30 PM.  More details will be provided the first day of class.

  • Students earn 1/2 credit for a High School elective course.  Parents are responsible for managing the transcript for their student. As a performance-based class, the instructors prefer to grade it as a pass/fail with recommendations for grading as needed.

  • If you have any other questions please reach out to the Instructor.
